John Joy (1925 – 1912)

A painter and draftsman, John Joy was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, lived there his whole life and died there. He also travelled extensively in Canada, the U.S.A., Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and the Arctic. Joy’s ‘back lane view’ paintings are very recognizable to many Canadian art collectors.

His mediums included oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, pen & ink and charcoal. His best known subjects were urban back lane views and rural landscapes. He also painted portraits, harbor views, still life, wilderness scenes, mountains and nudes. His primary styles are Plein Air Painting* and Realism*. The askART auction results have some excellent illustrations of his work.

His education included Central Technical School, Toronto (1940 – 1945), under Carl Schaefer, Peter Haworth and Doris McCarthy; and evening classes at the Ontario College of Art* (1944 – 1948).
